Screws vs. Ring Nails

Randy,When I was picking up my 16 foot kit, I believe you expressed a preference for ring nails over screws in the chine log because of greater ingress of water and rotting if screws are used. I am about to put on the UHMW plastic bottom. The instructions I have call for screws to attach it. Unlike the other fasteners going into the chine log, fasteners securing the plastic bottom cannot be sealed away from water with anything. Is there any experience securing the plastic bottom with ring…See More

Hi Dan,
would love to share pics of the Rozinante.

I read in your profile you have a Pearson, nice boats. I have a friend with a Pearson 30 on the Great Lakes. Have you done much sailing up in the San Juans? That is where I hope to bring the Rozinante in the next few years. She lives on a trailer, snug and dry, in an indoor RV unit in Idaho Falls, waiting for warmer weather.

It was a high solids alkyd enamel, the brand escapes me at the moment, but it was three coats covered with one coat of west systems epoxy on top. It will recieve another coat of epoxy with 207 hardener when the weather warms again.

Yes please do. It is always interesting to see progress pics!
Thanks for sharing. And yes, I already love the Subaru, as we have been getting hit with snow, AWD is the best thing EVER! (I had VW before, and it doesn't even come close to the way this handles in the slush/snow). ; )

Daniel,
Yes I am in the process of building the 17x52 Tatman right now.
I have focused most of my attention to the interior appointments thus far, building the seats and whatnot. I hope to start building the hull soon, but it has been ridiculously cold here - so I have been putting it off. I would be working in the garage for the hull build... and the basement has been much more inviting in terms of comfortable working conditions. I started tinkering late October and hope to able to use the boat this coming summer/fall season, but we will see.

Daniel,
Are you building a Tatman boat by chance?
I noticed Randy's comment and thought that you may be...

Welcome Daniel,
I'm glad you found the site. You should invite Jason Knight as a friend. He is starting work on one of our kits. He's also started a blog here about the progress. You can take a look at his first seat in the blog section.

Have fun.
