I would totally frame in the boat. Starting at the stem, then frame #5, 6,4,7,3,8,2,9,1
Prop up the boat on some saw horses.
Square up the hull.
Use a spanish wind-lass or band straps to pull it all together at the transom end until it "looks righ…
The warf rat is indeed cool. That's highly personalized. I see that Pat (heart) Amy on the seat riser- that's supposed to undo all those late nights in the garage and put-off honey do's, right?
Don't worry, we all got em! nice work.
It was Ken Brown - not Ken Baker. He built Tubby in 1972 from Harry Lagerstedt's plans, the boat's originator. Ken's boat is still in use. The pic is Ken running Black Bar Falls in 1978.
Also, take a look at the Koffler Rocky Mountain Trout Boat - at their website, and the Morgan Skiff at the Montana River Boats site. They are both aluminum, but are functionally what you are describing. I just gave my Koffler RMT to my son-in-law si…
AJ- any closer shots of that inner rail setup? what I see there is your sliding seats rest upon a fir 1x4 or so, and the space between the frames is filled in with some decking to make gear pockets. I like it and was thinking of doing something simi…
Yeah! That's it, EXACTLY!!!! AJ, that pretty much is the boat I'm longing to build.
Roger- I'm going to re-study the book. You are right, I recall the boat you and your grandson built. Flattening it out and taking a few inches of side height off wo…
Hi, Dave. At it again, eh? Take a look at the boat on pages 44 and 48 in my book, then re-read the first two or three paragraphs of that chapter on page 43. This is the boat I built with my grandson several years ago - taking the lines off this boat…
Dave nice work on your boats, you are quite skilled. I had a question for you, I found about a 10 inch plane and a old old block plane in my basement. Will the 10 inch plane work to make my scarf joints for my side and bottom panels(56")? Or do i need to buy a 22 inch plane? If I use my 10 inch plane , it was my Great Grandfathers and hasn't been sharpener/used since he used them . I have very limited knowledge or experience with planes. I remember you mentioning there was an art to sharpening planes? Any Help is appreciated. I love the barbies in the model you built. I have two daughters myself , who are 9 and 11 years old. They will get a kick out of those pictures for sure!
Dave, this is Rick Newman from Spokane. We have never spoken, but I have folowed your boats progress both on here and at Happy Trout Chronicles. Neat boat and great job as a father sharing your activities with your kids! I admire your accomplishments.
I know that you follow events here quite closely and wanted to see more pictures of the Wooden Boat Festival. I took quite a few and have three files of pictures that I sent to both Randy and Greg Hatten. The total file size is 356 Mb so it overwhelms most mailing methods. I use a service called Pando that is free and works relatively well. If you would like me to send you the pictures I would be happy to.
I have pictures from the Boat Parade, pictures of the overall boats and where appropriate pictures of boat construction details. Lastly I had pictures of "Boat People" and the overall event.
Anyway if you are interested let me know an email address and I wil send them.
Evidence to the contrary... your priorities are just right!! Rain-check on Oregon... "literally". One of these days we'll float a river - here or there...

Hey - Happy Trout... Great "post" - boat progress is coming right along!! Wish you were able to make it out here for the wooden boat weekend... it's right up your alley - you'd have a great time!!
Keep up the good work...

Yea I'm with you on the double-enders, fairest lines of all. Can't haul as much, but as Ray Wylie Hubbard says... some things under heaven, are just cooler than hell.
I just ordered a foot stomper from Sandy. How do you like yours?
Thanks for your response, most helpful. By the way, I was thinking the DE designation after your boat(s) listings stood for double-ender, but I see in your blog you have a transom. What's the DE.
Dave,
I am planning on a bright finish right now... oil interior.
The main rivers I would be floating will probably be the Pere Marquette, Ausable, and possible the Big Man, Muskegon, etc. I have not spent much time on most of them (the Pere Marquette is the most frequent) but I am hoping the boat will allow me to get out more and explore more water.
I was liking the idea of a wider, low side boat that we can fish one from the from and back at the same time. Hopefully a little less reactive to the wind, and large enough for some decent trips with a couple guys and gear.
I think my host provider is dead in the water.
They don't answer email and they don't answer the phone.
I bought a new server at godaddy.
Take me a day or two to move it.
...need some jolt cola and copenhagen to get this done.
