Grande Ronde flows for dories
1 Reply

I'm looking for information on minimum recommended flows for using a dory on the Grande Ronde River - Minam to Powwatka.  Any opinions would be welcome. ThanksContinue

"Since you are building a stitch and glue boat epoxy was the correct application for interior sealing. Stitch and glue boats need to encapsulate the plywood and prevent water infiltration. Even if you did not use glass with the epoxy, the boat should…"

Eric Loudenslager replied to Jason Knight's discussion Wood Question
"Yes, grain run-out will matter even if the board is not bent. It leads to a structural member with less strength. If a frame has run-out and the boat gets hit from the side, it will split where the grain runs out. Bending will make matters worse."

Eric Loudenslager replied to Jason Knight's discussion Wood Question
"Not sure what you mean by flat grain. One type of board is flat-sawn, rather than quarter-sawn, or rift-sawn. Vertical grain is preferred over boards with grain "run-out"...where the grain runs to the edge of the board. This can result in…"

Eric Loudenslager replied to stephen ludwig's discussion Making oars
"Canoe paddle makers often use a 2 oz fiberglass fabric epoxied to the blades to help with strength. Also, epoxy a hardwood tip with the grain going across the blade tip .... this will reduce splitting. Use the oars...that's why you made them.…"

Eric, the boat in the pics is my 16'5" boat. My old boat (which has a cracked chine and I havent been able to replace yet) is the 17' 54". Its a Tatman kit boat from 2000. My 16'5 which is in most of the pictures was built by Al Bukowsky, my summer boss.
