Maybe I should have included the disclaimer "Any similarities between the mass simulators and persons living or dead are purely coincidental”.   If I don't go fishing this weekend, I'll start cutting frames.

Very nice work, Guy!  I had done a quick calculation that said the weight of 3 guys + (325lbs boat + 400lbs other) figured into the bottom surface area gave me about 6in draft. I did not have a very good estimate for surface area since it…

Let's call this "The Three Amigos plus Dog plus Gear Float Test". At 1/8th scale, a 220-lb man weighs 195 g.  The equation is: (220 lb) x ((1/8)^3) x (454 g/1 lb) = 195 g Mass is a function of volume, hence the cube…

Thank you Rick. The frames are perpendicular to the chine edge.  The curvature of the chine edge is mathematically defined by the catenary curves.  That gives me an X-Y-Z coordinate for each side of the ¾-in. wide frame…

Stephen,  Very nice work and congratualtions on making it this far with your project.  I've been studying the photos that you've posted on this site.  I am going to use the center-runner along the bottom of the frames, like…

Guy, you have really gotten the boat building thing. From concept, spreadsheet, reproductions, modles, revisions to lumber and finally a working model. Your first post was January 6th and at this pace you will probably have your boat on the water by…

I finished the 1/8th-scale wood model of the boat.  It's not my best work, but it certainly served its purpose and I learned a lot.  The frames and panels went together perfectly, which means the spreadsheet calculations are dead…

The Port Orford Cedar for the frames arrived today! These guys did a great job, they are out of Winthrop, Washington.  Just look at that crating and packing.  And the wood is CVG quality.

All- I am waffling on these same questions myself.  I am building a 16-ft framed boat.  The options (as I see them) are: 1) 1/4 sides and 1/2 bottom 2) 3/8 sides and 1/2 bottom 3) 3/8 sides and 5/8 bottom Having never built a…

Guy,  That is some amazing work on the spreadsheet.   If I would have had something like that it would have saved me so much brain power that I used when planning my boat.  Kudos to you sir,  Andrew

Dave Z, Thanks.  Why 12 frames?  Just because.  I really like the look of the frames running the length of the classic wooden boat (drift boat, canoe, what ever).  So I decided to exaggerate that aspect a little on this…
