Some great shots of Blossom. When I first went down the Rogue it was rather low. I hit a rock on the pour off next the Picket Fence. Stern bounced off of it as I went through. Those were some low water years.
Lots of…
Kevin,
In the photos section on page 76, under April pics 195 and 193, you can see a good example of Steve Steeles work. Rick Newman took the photos. in 193 you can see the rowers seat and the stacking bunks that are on it. They…
I would venture to guess that the rowing seat is not original.. Reason for that is the front seat is built for stacking and there are no stacking bunks on the rowers seat. Another tell tale is the limber holes in the ribs, are they round…
Greg,
Those pictures and the video sure bring back some memories. I have not been down the Rogue in quite a few years though it seems like yesterday. I like reading about your adventures and the photos and videos that go with them. …
Greg,
By the way, my first trip down the Rogue, I swept the wall at Upper Black Bar. Lost my oar as it was scrubbed off by the wall. I did make it through, but what a first trip.....
Lots of fun over the…
It is not whether or not there is a good way to store a spare oar, it is whether or not you can get to it when you DESPERATELY need it. Do not tie the oar down in any way and do not get a break apart oar. In a drift boat you…
The middle fork has always been my favorite. I first started boating there in 1973 and have had some interesting trips over the years. Unfortunately I have not been back for a few years.
We encountered a lot of private…
Great photos and stories. I too grew up in Forks, WA and moved to Oregon for school and never went back. I was wondering if you keep in touch with the fishing up there still? I have fond memories of guiding and catching Sol Duc 18 pounders on a regular basis!

PPS, amen brother on wood being warm! That really makes a difference up here in the Fall! Flies will actually flash-freeze to a metal boat if you acidently let it hit the sides or other surfaces in a lot of the weather we fish in, not to mention my dog's feet! She will actually freeze down to a metal boat!

PS, just how in the heck did you stack up those 4 boats on one trailer?

Hi Herb, thanks for the words of welcome! I am glad you enjoyed my pictures, I really enjoyed taking them. I just checked out your photo album and love the exterior paint jobs on those boats! In a couple of the photos I feared for the paint with the proximity of some rocks in what is certainly some pretty fast water! Beautiful rivers you run and some nice steelies to boot! Bristol Bay is awesome, truly the "Last Frontier" of trout fishing! Also thanks for the words of advice on refinishing! I appreciate it. Talk at you later
Herb, I saw that you sent me a message but my computer was infected and I couldn't sign on to WBP until just now. I haven't seen your message in total but would now be happy to provide an answer if I can.
Thanks for the welcome Herb, I actually built my boat from scratch, so hopefully it will float. No one will go out with me for the first trip. I am in the final stages and need to sand before painting. I am guiding on the Bighorn at the end of march so I am hoping to get everything finalized and ready to float before then.

Expensive indeed! I had to work 2 jobs in addition to guiding - basically leaving me w/ no time to play; which was the reason I moved out there in the first place. Did you fish Gore Creek much? I never did, but always heard good things about it.
Hi Herb. I was just reading your post about white water on the forum and noticed that you guided on the Eagle. When was that? I guided on the Eagle a bit - from '95 to '97. Mostly worked on the Blue, Williams Fork, and Colorado. Most of that time I was guiding for the Orvis shop in Breck. Seems we have more in common than living in MI.
Hi Herb. Great looking boat you've got there and great pics. I've built a 17 foot Briggs Grand Canyon dory and been down the canyon several times, recently just finished a traditional 15 foot Mckenzie with transom from Fletcher's plans. Couple of questions; I've been down the middle fork several times in rafts, but what is your water level cut-off for drift boats? and would you think the Briggs dory is too big for that stretch? thanks for your input, Jim
