Since I can remember my favorite thing to do when visiting family in Seattle, was to visit the marina and look at boats, particularly the wood ones. Now I'm not religious, but when I bought my first house a year and a half ago, it had to have a shop, and it was like God told me to build a wood boat. I didn't really feel I had a choice. Now (1-10-09) I'm about 80% done with my 17' double ended Briggs Dory. Can't wait for spring runoff!
I've been rowing western rivers for 10 years in rafts.

Looks good. Nice job on the resto. I'm sure all the framed guys are gonna have a hernia over the lack of a Chine batten though. How much glass did you use on the chine. I think if it were me I would run some 1/2 strips of the cheapest hardwood…

Got'er done...she even handled some class II-III this weekend on the first annual Colorado Wooden Boat and Beer Float at Pumphouse on the Colorado (thanks Mark)...I've still got plenty of finishing touches to keep me busy for a while, but they're just details (rear bench, floorboards, casting deck, bottle openers, etc...)...

Too Far Gone?
It kills me that someone would leave a woodie sitting right-side-up in the dirt, uncovered for five years, totally neglected...but people do that kind of thing, and that is how I ended up with this beauty. It was not quite free on Craigslist. The good news is that all the varnish peeled ITSELF! its already bare wood, all I have to do is brush the crap off and vacuum it up! - Mornin Jeff, turns out I didn't float in the Grand in July due some family health issues. Those have all been cleared up now, and have now been invited on an October 9th Grand. It seems they have some more room, would you be available to then? It's a 21 day trip to Diamond, probably lower water levels but I've been down at those flows before with the dory and can show you the best way through all the big stuff. Let me know what works, Jim

- I just wrote you something but think I deleted it. anyway I'll say it again, if you're going to go over to ruby/horsethief, you might consider going a bit farther and running the Moab "dailies". My brother took that McKenzie red boat I just finished over there and said there's some actual whitewater there, and you would have a better idea of performance. In any event, I don't think you have anything to worry about, looks like you've got maximum stability in the design. When I looked at Roger's plans off the book, it looked identical to the plans I used from Andy, except I used construction similar to you - stitch and glue. Anyway, if I get a participant cancellation on the July Grand, come with us and let's give it a test run on some big water. Talk soon, Jim

- ll it doesn't look like it's really much flatter than the Briggs design I built from. Mine has about a 5 foot flat section in the middle, like all GC dories, and then moderate rocker fore and aft. that differs from the McKenzie boat I just finished with a continuous curve. What plans did you build from, and what length "flat" spot does the bottom have?
