I've finished laying out the deck of my stitch and glue dory based on Montana River Boats Honky Dory. My question is should I install bulk heads to compartmentalize different sections, or have one…Continue

Ran it last year running at 22,000.  Most every thing was washed out,  Hermit was big but not a scary pretty straight forward run left don't go in the big hole.   That was the only thing we scouted.  Didn't have to…

It wasn't intended on being a primer but it's a hell of a lot brighter on the lake than in my garage. So I think that I might tone it down a few shades. As for the Honky I didn't make any changes intentionally. As far as I know its…

Nice boat jimmy, looks great! Did you build the hull shape exactly the way sandys directions say to do it? i noticed that no two honkies look the same. I am building one right now .

Maiden Voyage

I've mostly finished the boat. Took it out for some lake trials today, it didn't sink or do anything unexpected. Just a few more details, paint, latches, etc, but all and all ready to float. Next weekend Desolation/Gray, the water should still be up there, so hopefully I bring it back in one piece. That stuff is really messy, but I think you could just hit it with a heat gun and sand out the area that that it damaged. might be easier than dealing with the 5 min epoxy.

I've also spent some time thinking about the unavoidable rock that I'm going to hit and put a hole in the boat. I was talking with a friend who lives and boats in Fairbanks, AK. He told me the way people up north fix mid-trip holes in the…

You'll probably put a couple holes in it, but you won't sink. My main issue is when I hit a rock and expose the plywood which begins to soak up water, and I feel like I need to make an immediate repair to keep the water from soaking in.…

I've decided, with the consenceis of everone I've talked to to go with bulkheads. As for the bottom, I've already finished it with 3/8" i didn't buy okoume, I got the cheaper marine grade form McBeths. I don't know if…

I have a 3 yr old whitewayer stitch and glue Honky Dory. I've put two holes in the bottom of my boat, and one in the chine. First rule is just don't hit rocks. Build your boat our of cardboard and fiberglass you'll probably be ok,…

Larry, I'm interested in what you think of the rigid foam bulk heads you've put in your boat. How has it held up, how did you attach them, would you do it again???

You've covered a lot in this post. Like my previous post explained, I have been struggling over whether of not to install bulkheads. It seems logical to me that the more flex the better. When I started building my boat I jumped in with both…

You are right on the mark. I have seen a bottom punch through right next to a bulkhead as you describe. There are ways to deal with this condition. Bulk heads with a 3/8 plywood bottom will lead to trouble. The side is less trouble then the bottom…

Jimmy,

I am currently researching hatch and latch design for a decked boat as well. Before I re-invent the wheel, was wondering what folks like yourself are doing for your boats...?

Cheers,

Robb
