Whitewater decking

I'm preparing for the decking for a Briggs style Grand Canyon Dory.   Do all of the tops of the frames (vertical ribs) need to be cut so the decking sits on top of them?  Or, do they poke through and…Continue

Self bailing cockpit and passenger area
3 Replies

Just about to roll a Briggs dory upright and begin the decking.  Would appreciate any insight on the self bailing cockpit (material/fittings) and the forward passenger area as well.

LOL. I am one of those crazy Paramedics. Became by virtue of being a whitewater kayaker in Jackson, Wy. Spent so much time on the river and was always drawn to the boaters that needed help. Finally decided I needed to help folks on a more…

Hey Steven, are you laminating or using solid blanks. I'd like to make some too this summer and any input would be great - Thanks - Joe

Ray, are you suggesting the spruce oars would have had a better feel at a 2" diameter and smaller blades? Joe

Anyone built laminated oars for whitewater? Need some 10footers for my briggs.

Joe Dengler replied to lhedrick's discussion 'Transom or not for the briggs design?'
Great seeing all of you out there! I went without the transom based on 2 local old dory guides input that they shuddered everytime during a downstream ferry the transom would get slapped hard by what they were trying to break through. I lost some…

Yeah, fantasic! Thanks Brad. "Duro" is the density. I needs to be at least as dense as my head.

It's really hard to tell, since all of them get good care and seem to be immortal. The ones with ribs seem to be a bit more of a pain to work on in a big crash scenario. And when you're fitting decks, painting, etc. they are a project to…

Hmm. I dunno. The receipt says 1107-5 Neoprene 60 Duro 1/2". Does that help?

Which density do you go with? Nott Atwater has a few options; basically Soft, Medium, Hard. Do you put a bevel on those strips? If so, do I need to hire a magician to pull it off? And Joe, sorry for the off track thread post.

How do you think the boats with bulkheads stack up against the Briggs with the bolted ribs in terms of longevity?

This is a brilliant thread. Brad said it, no logical answer to many of those questions. The beauty and hilarity is the magnificently nutball ways in which we justify these things to ourselves, and attempt to justify to others, namely our passengers…

One latch or two per hatch? Sure am enjoying the ridiculosity and tangents...brings the whole thing into suspect perspective.

Hey Joe...I did a stitch&glue boat, not framed, so specific and detailed measurements were not as important as w/ a framed boat. Do i understand you're building a framed boat?

write me on my yahoo account, and I'll give you my number and we can talk on the phone. I'd be happy to share my experience with you.
