Drift boat repair -- on the river
6 Replies

I got my 14 inch drift boat stuck on the rocks in shallow water on the Middle Fork Willamette River. The boat appears to be taking water on the seam (chine?). Will get it out of the channel - (not…Continue

Thanks for all the replies. I guess my fix was over-doing things. One thing I've learned is I'm not very good with wooden boats! And as for a 14 inch boat? Not easy to row, but not likely to scrape bottom, either.

By the way, how do you row a 14 " drift boat?  I you can probably limp in for 30 minutes.  If not, get to land, and dry it (fire, torch), and put in temporary fix as noted above to get in to the take out.  Then…

Great advice! Simpler than my fix: affixed plastic sheet to BIG hole with fast epoxy, nailed thin plywood pieces on top, then duct tape.

If it is a slow leak, just oar fast and bail it out when you get to the take out. If it is a huge leak and you can go to the hardware store you could get some spray foam and fill the crack up and let it cure for an hour or so, or get 5 minute epoxy…

Kristina, how much water is it taking on? How fast does it take it on? Can you bring a passenger with a bailing bucket? Can you dry it out enough to do a duct tape patch? Can you stuff rags in the damaged area? Could you screw a patch over the…

I'm still learning how to navigate this site, so forgive me if I don't respond at the right time in the right place. For those who commented on the fish photos, they were taken on a summer 2008 trip in Alaska - biggest trout I have ever…

About Me:
Met and married a fly fisher when I came to Oregon. We don't fish Oregon as much as we used to, and I thought I could change that by buying a drift boat - no more blowing up and deflating a raft, or watching one person fish while the other paddled the canoe. I was so excited about this that I bought the first used boat I saw. I know nothing about the boat - just wanted a "starter".

On its maiden run, we broke the "tilt" on the trailer, found a leak in the boat, and the swivel seat in front swiveled off its foundation. Overall I'm impressed by the maneuverability of the boat - much quicker than the raft. I admire all the wood drift boats I've seen on this site and the stories that go with them. One day I'll trade up, I hope.
Boats I own:

Welcome Kristina, Glad you're on the water, and you've found the right place to get help with that leak.

Post a couple of photos here and there with some questions and you will get all sorts of advice from the members.

Welcome.
