The next time I build a boat with ceramic tile I will call up Parker. Used since 1996 is not too much of a track record. The Kirby family has been making marine paint since 1846. I guess i am just an old stick in the mud and won't change my…

I get mine at Hamilton Marine 1-800-639-2715. Also someone reported that Tractor Supply has it- Apparently they use it for horse hoof repair or somesuch. Try the local big animal vet for a starter Off for the next 2 months going after stripe bass,…

Turps- now you are on the mark. Wipe off the excess with rags- best done out in the hot sun. You realy don't need the pine tar- but I love the smell of the stuff, and it will darken the hull somewhat. Good Luck

Do you really mean kerosene? We use kerosene lamps at the camp. A boat saturated with kerosene would stink to high heaven", might make some people sick to the stomach and be a big fire hazzard. Nowadays kerosene is dyed red- to prevent(detect)…

Lawrence E. Long replied to chris towles's discussion 'how big a batch for wet out?'
Cris: Some years ago I took one of Jason's courses on building a Freestone at the WoodenBoat School. The same thing happend to me- I screwed up the mix on a sidepanel batch of Raka- medium hardner I think. We laid it out the next morning in the…

You can also make the "sled" to fit on your table saw using the miter gauge slot and the clamps to hold things tight. 8:1 up to 12:1 will do nicely. Scarph the longer section in the middle of the boat- like an 8 ' section with 2- 4…

Lawrence E. Long replied to chris towles's discussion 'epoxy alternatives for general wood bonding'
Chris: See if you can find Weldwood Resorcinol Glue. Made by "DAP" I think-waterproof,2 part resin and powder. As I recall you can clean up the "squeeze out" with water. The 3M products 5200 and 4200 are messy to work with and…

Silicon bronze screws from Hamilton Marine 1-800-639-2715. Now, I go to Lowes for the usual around the house stuff, but never ,ever build a boat with ordinary steel screws- or "weather resistant" screws. In the order of preference: silicon…

AJ: While not a cap bedding operation I have built a centerboard trunk for a small sailboat using 5200. This stuff is amost impossible to remove once set up. Razorblades, scrapers, chisels -and it still sticks to the wood- and in the process the wood…

Lawrence E. Long replied to lhedrick's discussion 'Let's hear more about oars.'
Having no "white water" experience, I can only comment on rivers and coastal rowing. Some time back on a forum a guide said he found a source for stainless steel oar locks because he was springing his bronze locks open. I said this was BS-…

Lawrence E. Long replied to mitchell's discussion 'Franks custom oars vs. Sawyer solid ash smokers?'
Brad: lay off the ash - as we say here in Maine- "put the ash to her"- as in canoe padles.

Lawrence E. Long replied to mitchell's discussion 'Franks custom oars vs. Sawyer solid ash smokers?'
Mitch: you bought a set of used oars? You have used them for ten years? They have checks in them? They need to be sorted as to port and starboard? Paint one handle green the other red and get on with life. If this is too complicated get a copy of…

Lawrence E. Long replied to Ukulady's discussion 'Oar Handle Treatment?'
We just sand them smooth and leave them unfinished here in costal Maine. Buit then again we aren't running "white knuckle" rivers like the Colorado or Green. Why would you want to have the handle slippery? or sticky?

As to superstions re boats. It is considered to be unlucky if you say the word pig onboard, or whistle . Blue boats are bad luck. Have no idea the orgin of this stuff. And don't worry about any of it. But then again?

Lawrence E. Long replied to Troy Nicolls's discussion 'Where to find pine tar?'
Troy: Hamilton Marine 800-639-2715. If you get some from the ferrier it might be real "tar". Idf so warm it in a double boiler before mixing it with the LO/Turps/Drier. It will mix up much easier.

Den: You are right as to the sunlight and salt water. The best way to combat these problems is carefull maintenance. I have a skiff and a lapstrake peapod that sit on their moorings in the bay from late May to mid Sept. Insides get a coat of paint…
