Hi Rick - Don here in Paradise CA, I'm still in the wannabuild category, and hopefully in the selection process, I seem to be leaning toward the Rapid Robert Dory. Sweet boat you've made, and very pretty. Could you tell me a place to find the plans…

Thanks guys. I used all of the advice above soap, boiling water, a ladder, and a few words of my own.

boil the donuts. stand on a chair holding the oar, blade down. put on leather gloves, slide the donut down over the handle, and hang all your weight on the donut. donut will "roll" (not slide) all the way down...

like mentioned, warm soapy water. a oar stop question if you guys could help me with if you don't mind a little hijack. Last week I was rowing a friends boat. He keeps his stops right at the lock, taking away the ability to extend the oar out to t…

They will go on but it just takes some effort. Warm them up a bit and put some soap on the oar. I have used screw drivers like tire irons to get them on to the wrap. They are too much of a pain to deal with so I now use the plastic spacers which ha…

Thanks, I have no idea on the weight, but it seems a bit hefty.

Great looking boat and something you should be very proud of. I wonder if you could tell me the actual finished weight as pictured?

I'm with Ray on oar tips. The debate is whether to try and make them to strong to break, or too limber and supple to break. I go with the latter--soak them in turp/linseed all winter and between trips. That keeps them super-light and knife-like when…

Any time the question of "how long for my boat" comes up on these forums the old formula thing usually comes out. Formulas might be a starting point but as Dave has shown they are not the final answer. As Dave mentioned there are many factors to con…

Lets see, the old forumula is.... half the distance between oarlocks, divide by 7, then multiply by 25. You'll find it on various oar-maker sites too. Yields 9-1/2 footers for your boat. How it is devived, lets see.................. You have two…

Hi Rick - thanks for the book/plans advice. Have already bought the book, glanced at the Rapid Robert plans, now reading from the front toward the back. What a great book, its already helped me. With some drafting ability myself I want to use my own lines and using Rogers how-to. I want to install a jetski motor in my Rapid Robert - I think replanting that propulsion system will be a bigger challenge than the boat building. Will just take my chances I guess to see where the waterline will end up. If all goes well - in about a year? I won't need to think about the shuttle business any more - just remember to head UP stream when starting the day! I'm doing surgery on a 96 Yamaha 760cc now to remove its innards so I won't get the new hole the wrong size.. Thanks for your help. Don

Yea that's great country. I hunt the other side of that range (the Idaho side) for Elk. Do you ever take a day or so to get on the river?

When you added the extra length, did you have to change any of the bevels? I would like to build about like that, but about 17' long. The issue I am concerned with is the bevels. Any thoughts?

Rick,

I love your boat. Did you design it? What are the specs? I currently row a 16' Tatman, but am trying to find a design for a pram / skiff style boat. Any info you can offer would be great.

Thanks in advance,

Jesse Ronnow

Hi Rick, this is a beautiful boat! Sorry to be so cluesless, but what is the vintage of this boat? I'm thinking double ender constant rocker, maybe early 1940's, but i really know nothing. Thanks in advance for teaching me about this type of double square ender, yours, tom
