Larry, there are several sub species of spruce and in the Northwest its' Sitka Spruce, and is a widley used material for frames and spars. The weight to strength ratio is decent and as long as the frames are exposed there is limited chance of…

Dave – I do a lot of hand-work and while my collection system is Jet I tend to use it only when milling material. Like Lawrence I don’t turn it on when doing every small cut. My problem is the lighter particulates that remain airborne.…

What an incredible gift Roger! This is a gift that can move through the generations! Be sure to carve your name, date, and who you made the chest for on the bottom of one of the drawers. By the time this chest makes it to the seventh generation,…

Nice job

Good job with the Wooden Boat People, Randy. I think that when this gets up and running it will be a very nice complement to what's already out there.

Roger,

I am just about to start condtruction on a Pritchett Classic Rouge River Dory using the plans in your book. I am concerned about what to do with the bottom pannel. With scarfing two 1/2"x4x8 pannels my board will be 15'6". Will this be long enough to cover the bottom?

Great book my the way. Every time I look at it I learn something new.

No worries Roger - it was a busy day!! The new "bar" got a nice little work-out in the parade and is a welcomed addition.
That was such a fun day - great bunch of folks and incredible collection of boats!!

Hey there Roger... no problemo! You take care and I look forward to see you in the afternoon. Maybe we could meet for a beer at the "bar in my boat"??
We'll have a good float - but won't be the same without you...

Hi Roger...
Are you still up for the "float" in the parade on Saturday. Might be a little drop of rain - but I'll bring an umbrella. Randy asked me to take care of a reporter from KLCC (Jess Burns) who wants to do a story and ride in a drift boat in the parade. I think you guys would make a perfect pair in my boat for the float... you can fill her in on the history of the river, the boats, and your book... she'll get plenty of info to do a nice story. Is that OK with you??
Thanks,
GH

Hey Roger, I forgot to add that after looking at Drift Boats and River Dories, it sounds like Woodie had a diary. Is that available for research purposes? I'd like to know if Woodie mentions Fulmer's visit in 1945. Also, is there any record of Hindman's correspondence? I can't help but think Woodie and Fulmer stayed in touch, as Fulmer would have most likely wanted to send a photo of the finished GEM to Woodie. Please feel free to reach me by e-mail at tomhazel_AT_grand-canyon.az.us

Thanks again for all your assistance, yours, tom

Hi Roger, some time back I had given your book Drift Boats and River Dories away to a friend. Just bought another copy! Yeah book sales! It's funny, as your book means so much more to me now that we are building a boat then it did earlier, and WOW, what a terrific resource! Thank you so much for all your work on capturing this river history!!!
Yours, Tom

Hey the pleasure was mine... and I'm glad you like the addition of the "bar in my boat"... I've exchanged a couple of emails with Tom & volunteered to help in any way I can. Sounds like they have things already underway on the Gem, the Flavell, and the Susie. I asked him to post pictures of the progress - he'll have lots of fans on this site.
Hope things went well for you today & hope you can make it to Finn Rock at 10 (I invited the McKenzie Fire and Rescue to be our "shuttle" service for the morning....). I'll save my passenger seat for you but if you don't make it I'll see you at Eagle Rock... got a few silly additions to my boat besides the bar that might entertain you... GH

Hi Roger, ok, i'll try to give you a ring. Thanks so much for your number. Fulmer was in his late 30's when he entered WWII, and he ended up a drill sargent at Camp Adare. In 1945 he got leave one day to go into town, and he looked up Woody Hindman. They taked boats, and the next year Fulmer built the MOJA, a 15 foot long 15" rocker 4ft wide double ender. He wanted something a little more stable, so he built the GEM next. I'll be interested in your thoughts on the GEM given the above data. I'll also post a few more GEM photos. Hope to speak with you soon, yours, tom

Hi Roger, wanted to see what you know about a Grand Canyon boat called the GEM. Attached is a 1957 photo of the GEM between PT RTeill'y SUSIE R and FLAVELL, along with a 1" = 1ft scale model of the boat i made. I am also builing a full sized replica of the boat, and doing extensive research on Moutly Fulmer, the guy who built it. Any info you have on Fulmer would be much appreciated. Would it be possible to contact you by phone about this? My e-mail is tomhazel AT grand-canyon.az.us Thanks so much, Tom Martin
