Bottom of the boat

I am ready to seal the bottom of the boat.  What are the pros and cons to finishing the bottom of the boat; epoxy then glovet, fiberglass then glovet, or what?

Epoxy and glass... then call it good. I have been putting my fiberglass bottom to task for the past year and it is holding strong. scratched to all hell - but no major problems.

if your going to consider using glovit, consider using a product called coat-it. I find it tougher, longer lasting and a bit less expensive. I use coat-it on the shoe only

Try a GLUVIT search. It has been used in this neck of the woods with modest to minimal success. I wouldn't recommend it. Traditionasl 1/-inch wooden showe is pretty bullet proof, as is 20 to 24 ounces of fiberglass cloth and epoxy resin. There…

I would suggest that you "glovet" when you perform certain veterinary tasks on cattle, maybe Mike Rowe has an opinion on that. They make some especially long ones that are ideal. Rick Newman

What's glovet? Google thinks it's either a place in Qatar or a veterinary service. I wouldn't recommend either for a boat bottom.

Having just completed my first scarf joint ever, I was truly amazed at not only the strength, but the appearance of the joint. I would not hesitate to have multiple scarfs in the bottom of my boat. However, it did take me a few hours to complete.

Absolutely. The epoxy joint will be stronger than its surrounding wood anyway. Get a good mix!

You will need to cut a 1:12 slope on each piece. I made a jig and was then able to pass them thru my table saw on edge to cut the slope. I then epoxied them as per AJ's instructions that he gave me in the post. Worked excellent. Shawn

I asked the same question a short time ago in this forum (alternative to white oak for chines). It is usually difficult to find long lengths, but you can find 9'-10' lengths easily and scarf them. Several great suggestions were given about…
