Without a tablesaw?

You can never have too many tools. However, you certainly can build a framed drift boat with only portable saws. The places where you will miss the table saw most (in my opinion) are tapering the fra…

Old boat repair help

Justin: Did "beyond reasonable salvage" include him doing the work, and therefore, having to add a substantial labor charge that might indeed exceed the boat's worth? If, as you say, the only rot is…

Frame or stitch and glue?

Todd: Nothing wrong with your plan, but, please consider building a "Trapper" or "Rapid Robert" instead. (See your book.) If you keep the interior simple, I can't see how a pram would take that much…

Frame or stitch and glue?

Todd: I'm no expert having only built 2 boats. But, I believe the first thing you should do is get a copy of Roger Fletcher's book " Drift boats and River Dories". It gives the history, construction…

Wonderful! How blessed he and his family are for him to still be able to share in the fishing. He is truly an inspiration to us all.

Roger: Thanks for your reply, it is a great help. I also want to thank you for publishing your book. It has been a a great inspiration to me and God only knows how many other would be boat builders. I have purchased just about every book I could fin…

"Built by the book" weight is really dependent on material choices a builder makes. The traditional 14' RR with six frames, depending on material used, will show a hull weight of between 245 and 260 pounds. For the 12' Trapper, and i admit this is a…

I would really appreciate someone telling me how much a Rapid Robert built "by the book" and having exterior fiberglass should weigh.  How would it compare to a Trapper?

Zachary: Glad to hear of your plans. Reading your post is almost like someone asking "how do you build a house and what materials do you use?" In other words it would take hours to answer. I suggest you take advantage of the available sources of inf…

I have used it on several projects over the years. It doesn't seem to last very long. I have mixed it with linseed oil, varnish and wax and have done better. This past season I tired Penofin oil, the hardwood formulation. Several coats, let it soak…

Yeah, if you are doing a mix with pine tar, don't forget that Japan Drier! And it is good to rub this finish dry after a good soak regardless--it sometimes stays gooey even with the Japan Drier if it is thick. One more note--some folks substitute M…

Larry: When using the mix to do a bunkhouse floor I forgot to add the Japan Drier- this was 6-7 years ago. In spots it is still a little "tacky" and my wife reminds me of this at times. Going a little heavy on the drier side won't hurt. My mix is 1…

Yeah, a good spar with good UV. And no, you don't have to re-sand.

Jonathan, That nails it. I will use a home made mix. Thanks a lot!
